Nineteenth Century Collections Online

Product Vision

Nineteenth Century Collections Online unites multiple, distinct archives into a single resource of over one hundred types of primary source documents. The content is sourced from the world’s preeminent libraries and archives. It consists of monographs, newspapers, pamphlets, manuscripts, ephemera, maps, photographs, statistics, and other kinds of documents in both Western and non-Western languages. Because some documents are rare and in delicate or extremely fragile condition, Gale works in close coordination with curators and preservationists to maintain the originals for posterity. With authoritative content, trustworthy and extensive bibliographic information, and technology that fits the needs of today’s researchers, Nineteenth Century Collections Online is poised to revolutionize research on the nineteenth century.

Process

Market research, user surveys, and user Interviews were all used to gather the data on the persona for this product. Persona was created from the analysis of this data collection. Also, scenarios were created and reviewed to drive feature selection, implementation, and interaction design. Competitor product reviews were also conducted through Heuristic evaluations and interviews to determine expectations for the users.

Outcome

Features, phasing, and selection of content were driven from a Persona perspective. Therefore each interaction was reviewed for flow and usability from the perspective of that persona. Many unnecessary features and interactions had eliminated to allow for the best implementation of the most important user needs.
